| [Pharmacological activities] |
1. The flavonoids, ethylacetate extract and n-butanol extract of Cirsii Herba exhibit actions on stopping hemorrhage, blood coagulation, and anti-inflammation[1,2]. 2. The water extract of Cirsii Herba have an inhibiting effect on human liver cancer cell line HepG2, cervical carcinoma cell line Hela, leukemia cell line K562 and gastric cancer cell line BGC823 [3]. 3. The extracts of Cirsii Herba processed by 60% ethanol, 50% methanol, distilled water and acetone have a scavenging action on hydroxyl radicals and superoxide free radicals greatly[4]. 4. The extracts of Cirsii Herba processed by ethanol and water could enhance the force and rate of myocardial contraction of rabbit and guinea pig[5]. 5. The ethanol extract of Cirsii Herba also has the inhibiting effect on tubercle bacillus[5]. |

| [Clinical trial] | 1.Chronic bronchitis: 50 cases were treate with Pingwei Xiaoji(Common Thistle) Decoction ( Xiaoji (Common Thistle)25g, shiwei(Pyrrosia Leaf)25g, pingdimu（Herba Ardisiae Japonicae）30g), 1 agent daily, 2 weeks as a course.Results showed that 38 cases were cured, 10 cases effective,the effective rate was 96%[1]. 2. Nephritis hematuria: 30 cases were treate with Xiaojiyinzi Decoction ( Xiaoji(Common Thistle), tongcao（Tetrapanax papyriferus）, puhuang（Typhae Pollen）, danggui(angelica sinensis), etc.) combining with Compound Danshen(Salvia Miltiorrhiza Bge) injection and routine western medicine treatment. The control group was treated with simple routine western medicine treatment. Results showed that the total effective rates of the treatment group and the control group were 80%, 56.7%; hematuria duration times of the treatment group and the control group were (6.90± 5.15 ), ( 11.04±1.75) ; the curative effect in treatment group than in control group (P<0.01) [2]. 3. Epistaxis: fresh Xiaoji(Common Thistle) pressed for juice, added brown sugar. 2 times daily. 44 cases received good effect [3]. 4. Sores: 200 cases were treated with fresh Xiaoji(Common Thistle) pressed for juice, added white vaseline into ointment. It can be cured after 4 ～7 times, with no adverse side effects [4]. |
