[Ecology]     It commonly in ditch side field side and dank area beside road.It grows badly in too dry soil. Barbed Skullcap Herb prefers warm and moist climate,no strict damand of soil.  
[Chemical composition]

This plant contains flavone carthamidin, iso-carthamidin, scutellarein, scutellarin, wogonin, rivularin, scutervulin, naringenin, hispidulin, eriodictyol, 5,7,4′-trihydroxy-6-methoxy flavanone, 4′-hydroxywogonin, 7-hydroxy-5,8-dimethoxy flavone[1], scutellarein, scutellarin[2,3], 4′-hydroxywogonin[4], luteolin, apigenin[5], apigenin-7-O-β-glucoside, ethyl-7-O-apigenin-glucuronate, apigenin-7-O-neohesperidoside[6], 6-hydroxycoumarin)[7];

organic acid: p-coumaric aicd, protocatechuic acid, ursolic acid[1], vanillic acid, isovanillic acid[17], benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, chlorogenic acid[8];

It also contains E-1-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)-butylene-3-one[9], SBP[10], scutebarbatine A[11], menthol, linalool, α-terpineol, thymol[12].

onic gastritis: There were diagnosis and treatment based on Traditional Chinese Medicine Banzhilian(Scutellaria barbata) and baihuashe (Oldenlandia diffusa) of 87 patients,16cases of stomach-heat syndrome combined with shigao(gypsum), shihu (dendrobium), etc.; liver-stomach disharmony  were 21, plus chaihu ( Bupleurum, Cyperusrotundus) for soothing liver and harmonizing stomach; spleen-stomach deficiencywere 17 cases, added the shashen (ladybell), maidong (Radix ophiopogonis) fornourishing gastritis; the deficiency-cold in six cases with temperature andcold-dispelling gas emitted  pain to addliangjiang(galangal), xiangfu (Cyperus rotundus), spleen-stomachdeficiency of 19 cases, plus dangshen(Codonopsis) and chaobaizhu (Atractylodes)for filling in the spleen, 8 cases of blood stasis, adding danshen(Salvia) andbaishao (peony root) for promoting  bloodcirculation, swallowing sanqi (panax notoginseng) powder 6g orYunnanbaiyao 3g every time, 2 times a day. Results: The effectiverate was 100%, the cure rate was 89.7%. 46 cases in the control grouptaking Western medicine domperidone, Gastric Mucin, amoxicillin doing the samecourse of treatment, the effective rate was 82.2%, the cure rate was54.3%. The treatment group were significantly higher than the controlgroup of the efficient and cure rate (P <0.01) [1]. 
2. Hematuria: The banzhilian soup (banzhilian(Scutellaria barbata) 15~30g (based-medicine), zhimu (Anemarrhena) l0g, huangbo(Treats) 12g, huangqi (astragalus) 15~30g, hanliancao (Eclipta) 15g, shanyurou(cornus) 10g, baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae) 30g) , distinguishing sicknessand treatment 65 cases with hematuria: the lower burner damp-heat patients wereadded  mutong (akebia), qumai (Dianthussuperbus)
etc; fire excess from yin deficiency patients were added raw shudi(Rehmannia), nvzizheng (Ligustrum lucidum), etc; both spleen and kidneydeficiency type were added shanyao(yams) and baizhu (Atractylodes), etc;Urinary calculus patients were added jinqiancao(desmodium), jineijin(Endothelium Corneum Gigeriae galli),etc; with blood stasis patients were addeddanshen (salviae miltiorrhizae), tianqi (Panax Notoginseng); with deficiency ofblood plus danggui (Angelica), ejiao (donkey-hide glue). Daily 1 agent withwater fried) for patients. Results: 5 cases were clinical cure, l7 cases weremarkedly effective, 10 cases were effective, 3 cases were invalid, the totaleffective rate was 95.4% [2].
 
3. Furuncle of nose: Using banzhilian (cutellariabarbata), xiaoyeqing each 2 fresh
whole plants,weighing about 3 ~ 5g, washed with water, smashed drunk, by adding the rightamount of 75% alcohol, mixed 2 drops of Azone, deposited on the uplift department of furuncle swollen surface, every 4h change  one , 3 days a course to determine theefficacy. Results:cured 31 cases, 2 cases improved, and 3 cases invalid, the total effective ratewas 91.67% [3].

[Properties]

Taste: bitter, pungent; property: cold; belong to lung, kidney and liver channels.

 
[Medical and other Uses]

Function: clearing away the heat-evil and removing toxic agents, eliminating wetness, dissipating blood stasis and arresting bleeding, inducing diuresis to reduce edema.

Syndromes to be treated: sore throat, lung abscess, appendicitis, toxic heat, carbuncles, snake bites, bruises, nose bleeding, vomiting, discredited, edema, ascites.

 
[Dosage]

Oral administration: decoction 1530g. fresh herb redouble the dosage;

Topical application: in right amount, smashed and smear on the skin.

 
[Cautions]

Be carefully to be used in the Physically weak patient and pregnant women.
