[Pharmacological activities]

1. Antibacterial: The circular filter paper was presoaked with 100% Cinnamomi ramulus water extract and observed the significant growth inhibition on the following bacteria: Staphylococcus aureusStaphylococcus albicansPseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgarisα-hemolyticstreptococcusβ-hemlyticstreptococcus [1]. The killing effect on E. coli of Cinnamomi ramulus tincture and distillate extract was significantly better than the powder and boiling liquid extract. The distillate disinfection experiment results show that it could obviously kill the Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. After the water solution including stock solution 60% has been acted to the E. coli for 1 min, the sterilization rate is 99.99%. The rate is 100% for 5 min. After the 40% solution has been acted to the Staphylococcus aureus for 3 min, the sterilization rate is 99.99%. The rate is 100% for 7 min. However, it play a poor role in Bacillus subtilis [2].

2. Anti-allergy: The Cinnamomi ramulus extract has a high level of hyaluronidase inhibition rate with a strong anti-allergic effects [3]. The radical scavenging activity and hyaluronidase inhibition of Cinnamomi ramulus extract were corresponding increase in the extraction and separation process. The hyaluronidase inhibition greater than 30% of the components have the role of scavenging oxygen free radicals. It is consistent with the mechanism in the free radicals participate in the allergic process. It could also predict the anti-allergic mechanism is that it could effectively scavenge oxygen free radicals, block the release of allergenic substance, so as to achieve the removal of the allergy symptoms effect [4].

3. Anti-inflammatory: the volatile oil of ramulus cinnamomi (VORC) could obviously observed antagonistic effect on xylene-induced mouse ear edema, acetic acid-induced mouse peritoneal capillary permeability hyperactivity and carrageenan-induced rat paw swelling. It could also found the significantly inhibition on the total number of peripheral white blood cells, lymphocyte percentage, and lymphocyte count of LPS-induced acute pneumonia model [5]

4. Others: The cinnamomi ramulus decoction can significantly reduce the prostate wet weight and prostatic index of benign prostatic hyperplasia, suggesting that different extract of Cinnamomi ramulus showed suppression performance on benign prostatic hyperplasia [6]. Cinnamomi ramulus could obviously prolong the pain threshold of thermally-induced pain in mice. It could also have significantly antagonistic effect on acetic acid-induced pain in mice. And the alcohol extract has the significant analgesia effect [7]

[Clinical trial]

Hypotension: (1) 85 cases were treated with decotation(Cinnamomi Cortex 30g, Cinnamomi Ramulus 30g, Glycyrrhizae Radix Et Rhizoma 15g.), the effect was significant, the blood pressure could increase after 3 days treatment[1]. (2) 117 cases were treated with decotation(Cinnamomi Cortex 40g, Cinnamomi Ramulus 40g, Glycyrrhizae Radix Et Rhizoma 20g.), one prescription for 3 days, blood pressure could increase after 2-3 days treatment[2]. (3) 30 cases were treated with decotation(Cinnamomi Cortex 30g, Changii Radix 15g, Polygonati Rhizoma 12g, 10 Jujubae Fructus, Glycyrrhizae Radix Et Rhizoma 6g), one prescription a day, 15 days for one period of treatment. Results: except two cases failed to use medicine, 15 cases’ symptoms disappeared after 15 days treatment , 13 cases’ symptoms disappeared after 30 days treatment. 28 patients did not appear poor reactions during treatment[3].
