This crude drug is the spine of Gleditsia sinensis Lam. (family: Leguminosae).

This crude drug is maily produced in Jiangsu, Hubei, Hebei, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong in China, also in Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Anhui, Zhejiang, Guizhou, Shaanxi, Jiangxi and Gansu.

The spines can be gathered all year round, the best collection period being from September to nest March. After collected, they are sliced and dried in the sun.

1 The immunomodulatory and anti-allergic effects: Studies have shown that Chinese Honeylocust Spine can regulate the body's immune system. Wang Zhanbin [1] injected the ethanol extract of Chinese Honeylocust Spine on broilers, in order to observe its impact on broiler's immune function. The results showed that low-dose group of Chinese Honeylocust Spine extract could significantly improve the transformation rate of T and B lymphocyte in broiler, promote the immune system and promote growth at the same time; but the high dose group has the opposite effect.

2 Anti-tumor effect: Chinese Honeylocust Spine has some anti-tumor effects, it has been used for the treatment of a variety of tumors and has been listed as one of the Chinese Herbal Medicines having anti-tumor effect. The inhibition rate of hot water extract of Chinese Honeylocust Spine on cultured human cervical cancer strains JTC-6 is 50%~70%, it can also inhibit mouse fibrosarcoma -180. The water decoction of Chinese Honeylocust Spine and Gleditsia branches can be used to treat nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Chinese Honeylocust Spine can also treat papillary carcinoma of the soft palate, nasopharyngeal carcinoma lymph node metastasis and gastric cancer, which all have achieved good effects [2].
