[Pharmacological activities]

1. The water, chloroform extracts of Carica papaya Linn. seeds have anti-fertility effect on male rats[1,2].

2. The fruit, seed, juice and the latex of unripe papaya could inhibit the growth of microorganism, for example, Bacillus subtillis, escherichia coli, staphylococcus aureus, proteus, pseudomonas, pneumobacillus, fungus and so on. Carpaine also exhibits killing effect on amebae, roundworm and trichurid[3-5].

3. Carica papaya possesses free radical scavenging and antioxidant actions[6].

4. The papain isolated from Carica papaya could improve digestion and be used in gastritis and dyspepsia. It could also be used in hypersensitivity disease[3,7].
