[Characteristics]
[Ecology]     It mostly is planted in plain and gentle slope at the altitude below 500 metres, the optimal soil is loose with thick soil layergood drainagepH value between 5.5. to 7.0rich humus. In our country,it flowers and fruits normally in the area with mean annual temperature 21,and the optimum is between 25 to 27. Pepper avoids waterlogging as taboos, but requires precipitation abundant and uniform distribution. Pepper’s requirements for light is different by varieties and age. Most of cultivation variety doesn’t need shadow.

[Pharmacological activities]

1. The Piperine and its derivatives (Antiepilepsirine, 7302, 7306, 7446,  7448) belong to a new class of anticonvulsants. They were found to be able to protect rats and mice from seizures produced by maximal electroshock, metrazol, picrotoxin, strychnine, tubocurarine and sodium glutamate, and reduce the mortality of animals to various extends. In addition, they were found to have sedative effects and intensify the central action of other depressants[1-3]. The mechanism of anticonvulsive action may be related to increase the concentration of 5-HT and decrease glutamate, aspartate and block the KAR in the mouse brain[4].

2. Piperine may prevent the formation of cholesterol gallstone through inhibiting the lithogenic role of aminopeptidase N[5].

3. Piperine has the ability to prevent delayed cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage

in rabbit, which maybe has some relations with the effect of Piperine to protect the activity of eNOS and reduce production of ET-1, TNF-a, IL-1β and IL-6[6,7].

4. Piperine also exhibits anti-inflammatory action and cytotoxicity effect on cultured human HepG2 cells in vitro, it could inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis of HepG2 cells[8,9].

[Clinical trial]

1. infants diarrhea:55 cases of patients were treated with hujiao(Pepper) powder (pepper 40g , rougui (Cinnamon) 10g ,dingxiang(clove) 10g, Wu Zhuyu(Medicinal Evodia Fruit) 10g,sharen(Villous Amomum Fruit) 10g , matixiang(Saruma henryi )10g. grinded Altogether) ,it coverd on the umbilicus, 510min every time, 1 times daily, the treatement time last 1day to 4days. the average time was 3 days. Results showed that 41 cases were cured, 10 cases improved, 4 cases were invalid, the total efficiency was 92.73%[1].  white pepper l0 grain grinded with yellow wine or white win, covered on Shenque acupoint, Results showed that 42 cases had effect(72.4%), 16 cases had significant effect ( 27.5%)[2]

2.cough: 166 cases were treated with pepper mixed with cool oil and made ointment to spread in about 3cm×5 cm sizes Zhuifeng plaster, covered on bilateral Feishu acupoint. 5 days for 1 coures of treatment. Results showed after 13 courses of treatment, 121 cases were cured, accounting for 72.89%; 36 cases improved, accounting for 21.69%; 9 cases were invalid, accounting for 5.42%. The total efficiency was 94.58% [3].
